This comment is to "newyorkwasgreat" -- I attended the same No Kill Conference that the blog author did. You know what just ONE of the things I learned was? That a shelter's save rate is DOES NOT CORRELATE to its budget. A rich shelter can go no-kill; a poor shelter can go no-kill.

The fact that the high-level PSPCA and ACCT staff members attended, and presented, at this conference and have NO plan to go no-kill themselves should tell you that THIS PARTICULAR shelter has no interest in positive change.

To Karla, that is great news! I am meeting with CNKP tonight. I will celebrate this change, as well as offer my help to keep up the momentum.

Maybe I was overly influenced by reading The Diary of Anne Frank when I was very young, but I DO believe that the majority of people are good at heart. And I believe that we can make changes in animal welfare, one step at a time. Thank you for your comment.

To Anonymous, thanks. As I see it nothing will change if the public is not aware of the problem. If the P and ACCT need more help, then they need to stop playing secrets and tell the public what's going on. And be honest. Stop denying the truth and lift the gag order on employees. Say, no scream from the highest buildings, "Hey we don't want to kill thousands of healthy animals anymore, please help us!" People want to help.

It's amazing to me the work that gets done through social media alone. Mike Fry of Animal Ark turned me on to the seemingly endless possibilities of free advertising on social media sites. And I will be blogging more about the grass-roots efforts of the small rescues and TNR groups in the future. They need the publicity as well.

Yes, newyork, I KNOW the people who work there care. I left behind a great crew of nurses and doctors, an awesome hospital supervisor and incredibly hard-working volunteers. I will back those people up in every way I can until I drop.

It does cost the shelter money to give cats away for a dollar. Those cats get vaccines, microchips and spay/neuter, and the cost goes up depending on how long they have been residents and whether they have had to have other surgeries and medications. Those services are not cheap, so, the shelter takes the hit on all that. It adds up to HUGE amounts of money. The adoption fee is there to defray the costs gone into the animal being adopted, but never covers all of it.

Do I think it's an inherently bad idea to give cats away? No. I believe a person can love a free cat as much as he/she can love a cat that cost them $20 or $40. However, it's still lost revenue that could go to other programs. Every time someone walks out that door without giving something, anything, that door comes closer to closing for good.

How's this: "In my EXPERIENCE, old-school shelters don't want to hear ideas from the volunteers and workers to improve the lives and life-spans of the animals under their care." That's my opinion, and that is what I and many of my co-workers at the P have run into. When more of them speak out, I will be proven right on this. Until then, we'll just call it my opinion. Does that change my credibility?

And just for those who still think I don't care, the P happily takes money from my banking account every single month. Still. I haven't stopped the payments despite my disagreements with them. This is money I can ill afford due to my husband's illness. But I make it happen because if we all stopped giving, they would have to shut their doors.

But wait, there's more. I have a core group, help to obtain 501 (c) status, and more ideas than you can imagine. More ideas than I can possibly handle by myself. Which is why I have surrounded myself with like-minded individuals who will help me. All this is taking every minute of my days off, but I WILL make a dent in Philly. Because this is my city, and those animals are all our responsibility.

For those who have made up their minds that I am just "boo hooing" and not doing any good, no number of sleepless nights, no amount of financial help on my part will change their opinions of me. Guess how much I care? Very little. Because the big picture is more important than your opinion of little ole me. Those animals mean more to me than any human's view of my actions. Theirs are the faces that haunt me. In fact, I welcome the criticism. Bring it on.

Because this has become my personal motto, I will quote the band Frightened Rabbit, "Mark my words, I'll make tiny changes to Earth."

I just got an email from Citizens for a No-Kill Philly stating that that animal control contract will be increased by $1 MILLION because the management of the contract will no longer be under the Dept of Health but moved to the Managing Director's Office. So maybe there's hope on the horizon.
